Samoan Art: Urban is the first group exhibition of work by contemporary Samoan artists in the United States . Samoan Art: Urban features multimedia work including graffiti art, animation, digital and analogue photography, self portraiture, hip hop music video, documentary film and performance.
The artists in Samoan Art: Urban navigate a range of issues and concerns such as identity and identification, spirituality, the environment, colonisation, youth and street culture, survival and what it is to speak from the position of different cultures. Samoan Art: Urban is a snapshot of the exciting contemporary art being produced by Niu Urban Pasifik artists working in the diaspora today.

Giles Peterson - Contemporary Pacific Art:

My monthly posts will address my curated projects of Contemporay Pacific Art - past and present.
I am an independent curator of contemporary urban art from the Pacific Rim. I was born in Papua New Guinea in 1969 and work with both established and young emerging aritsts from Aotearoa (New Zealand), the Cook Islands, Samoa, Tonga, Niue, Hawaii, Papua New Guinea, and the Pacific coast of Mexico and Australia.
My curatorial career extends over fifteen years including landmark exhibitions of national and international significance, such as Out Of the Blue (2001), Island Crossings (2000), Ring of Fire (1999), Heart of the Niu (1998), and Urban Pacific (2007).
This past year, I curated my first two exhibitions in the Americas including Niu Pasifik: Urban Art from the Pacific Rim at UC Davis and Tiaho: Photography from Oceania at three venues across Mexico City and Mexico State.
In october 2010 Il curated the group exhibition Samoan Art: Urban - the first exhibition of Contemporary Samoan art in the USA - at the De Young Museum, San Fransisco where I also undertake a curatorial residency at the kimball education gallery. This exhibition featured digital and analogue photography, graff art and drawing, painting, sculpture, installation, underground hip hop music, performance and fllm .
My curatorial work has been reviwed in Art Asia Pacific Quarterly, Art Australia, Object Magazine, Eyeline,
Art News and Art N ew Zealand as well as numerous books.
In April 2011 I will tour an exhibition of Contemporary Pacific Photography and Film to Cuba and also show
the exhibition to communities in Mexico. I am interested in bringing contemporary Pacific art to new communities and audiences. Much of my work is concerned with youth culture and hip hop. I see the exhibitions I curate as catalysts for social change. I work at grassrooots level. Im interested in guerrilla curating.
